In the fall of 2016, a determined group of women in Fairfield County, Connecticut, reignited the dream of establishing a women’s rugby team—a vision that first emerged in 2004 and was revisited in 2011. Despite past challenges, their shared passion for rugby and commitment to inclusivity and empowerment in sports drove them forward. This marked the beginning of FLY Rugby, a team that would soon stand as a pillar of diversity, inclusivity, and women’s empowerment in the rugby community.
The path to establishing FLY Rugby was paved with perseverance and collective effort. The early attempts taught valuable lessons that shaped the team’s successful establishment. The significant milestone came in 2017 when FLY Rugby received official recognition under Empire GU Rugby, affirming the team’s hard work and the growing support for women’s rugby.
Since then, FLY Rugby has been on an uplifting journey to solidify its presence in the rugby world. The team’s dedication to creating a welcoming environment for players of all backgrounds has attracted a diverse group, each contributing unique strengths and perspectives. FLY Rugby’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and a shared vision, serving as an inspiration to female athletes everywhere and proving that with determination and support, any dream can be achieved.
